Among the more than 2,000 drawings present in the pampas of Jumana, in the middle of the Nazca desert, in southern Peru, there are 16 that do not seem to be as long as I had thought they were. All of them are believed to represent exotic birds, especially rare in this region of South America. Japanese researchers, however, point to a more plausible meaning.
Masaki Eda, from the Hokkaido University Museum; Takeshi Yamasaki of the Yamashina Institute of Ornithology; and Masato Sakai, from the University of Yamagata have applied a new ornithological approach to determine that these geoglyphs or Nazca Lines are, in fact, pelicans or hermit birds, according to a study published in the Journal of Archaeological Science: Reports.

Located about 400 kilometers south of Lima, near the Pacific Ocean, these huge engravings on the earth are part of the World Heritage and cover an area of about 450 square kilometers. Pre-Inca peoples carved them on the ground between 400 B.C. and 1000 after Christ and include lines, geometric designs, and drawings of animals and plants.
