Although a lot has been done to help our school
community understand the concept of sustainability,
it seems that people haven’t been listening or haven’t
understood the importance of this concept. Fifteenyear-
old Jack O’Sullivan, one of our classmates and a
self-motivated environmentalist, has been trying to raise
awareness about this issue for a while. He has also
become an active individual in researching and informing
our school community about different ways in which we
can be environmentally friendly.

“How have you been trying to convince others to change
their ways, Jack?” “I haven’t been trying to convince
anybody. I’ve been trying to let everyone know that despite
the terrible harm that the automotive, food and energy
industries do to the planet, there is still a lot we can do
to help. Everyone has a choice whether to cooperate, or
not. My family has been so dedicated to the cause that I
am on cloud nine . We have been making efforts to reduce
the use of household energy. Lately, in our house we have
been turning off all the appliances and lights that we are
not using. Also, instead of using our dryer, we have been
hanging our clothes to dry,” he said.

Jack says he has been having trouble making his relatives
and school community understand it is not sustainable
for a single person to rely on one car to, for example,
commute to work or move around the city. He has been
talking to them about the different mass transit options
there are in the city. Since last month, he has also been
showing them new services, such as carpooling or
vanpooling, that help diminish the use of fossil fuels and,
thus, the emission of greenhouse gases.

Young Jack has been leading a movement he has called
“Drag me to school!” He based this proposal on two of the
ethics of permaculture: earth care and people care. He
basically proposes two ways to commute to school:
- parents, teachers, and school workers picking
up and driving several kids
- students, school workers, and teachers walking
or riding their bikes
He knows that completely eliminating CO2 emissions
is simply impossible, but he is hopeful that his school
community will unite together through these activities and
help offset its carbon footprint.
