They are mammalian animals, exclusively herbivorous, whose main characteristic –in addition to their large size– is their long trunk and enormous ears. They are organized in herds of about 20 members, the largest specimens measure almost 4 meters and can weigh more than 6,000 kilos. They usually live around 70 years and have the longest gestation period of all animals: 22 months. As soon as they are born, the pups already weigh more than 100 kilos.
Due to their large size, they also have a very large brain, which is why they are very intelligent animals that are associated with behaviors such as mourning for a loss, association with other members, the use of tools, adoption, play and even self-recognition.
The ears of the elephants act as a thermostat helping to withstand the strong heat of the areas where they live and their trunk is actually nothing more than a highly developed nose that they also use as a long arm. The tusks are used to search for food and water and are one of the reasons why this species is threatened, since man uses them for the value of the ivory.

Debido a su gran tamaño, tienen también un cerebro muy grande por lo cual son animales muy inteligentes a los que se asocian comportamientos como el duelo por una pérdida, la asociación con otros miembros, el uso de herramientas, la adopción, el juego e incluso el autorreconocimiento.
Las orejas de los elefantes actúan como termostato ayudando a soportar el fuerte calor de las zonas donde habitan y su trompa en realidad no es más que una nariz muy desarrollada que también usan como un brazo largo. Los colmillos los usan para buscar comida y agua y son uno de los motivos por los que esta especie se encuentra amenazada, ya que el hombre los utiliza por el valor del marfil.
