The dogs were under the table.

Generalmente, "was" se usa para objetos singulares y "were" se usa para objetos plurales.

Entonces, usarás "was" con I, he, she y it, mientras que usará "were" con you, they y we.

Hay un consejo que quizás quieras considerar, aunque sea singular, algunas veces se debe utilizar "were".
