Toru Kumon (公文 公) (く も ん と お る) ( March 26, 1914 - July 25, 1995) was born in Osaka in the province of Kochi, Japan . He graduated from Osaka University where he earned a degree in Mathematics . He was professor of mathematics at a college high school in Osaka. In 1954 , Kumon began to teach his own son who was failing math in elementary school, and with this experience developed the method that bears his name.

The method is based on repetition of basic math problems such as addition , subtraction, multiplication and division until skill is acquired. Kumon defined skill as the ability to get a high score in a subject at a given time, which gives the student benefits in the presentation of standardized tests and timed at school.
