Avril Lavigne comes from a middle-class Christian family. She is the daughter of John and Judy Lavigne, both of French-Canadian origin, she was born on September 27, 1984 in Belleville, Ontario, but a few months later they moved to Napanee, also in Ontario. She sang gospel and country songs. A few years later, Avril devoted herself to singing at fairs. When she grew up, she taught herself to play the guitar.

In 1998, at the age of thirteen, she won a singing contest sponsored by a local radio station, earning the opportunity to share the stage with singer Shania Twain. Avril performed for the first time in front of an audience of approximately 20,000 people.
