Entrepreneurship in Haiti

Being an entrepreneur in Haiti involves overcoming difficult obstacles that you usually do not consider when studying the potential difficulties an entrepreneur faces. Being innovative, creative, and passionate about your business is still important but, in Haiti, it also means having to consider some other potential difficulties that many entrepreneurs in developed countries do not have to deal with when starting a business.

Caribbean Craft is a certified FairTrade manufacturer of paper maché products in Haiti. Its owner, Magalie Dresse, realised that for her business to grow she needed to invest in her employees’ skills. Teaching employees to read and how to manage tasks required great energy and financing. But being in a poor country like Haiti requires creative methods to find ways to get employees this training.

Dresse reached out to non-profit organisations (you will learn about these in the next section) and NGOs (non-governmental organisations) to secure financing to train her workers. She described this undertaking as a collaborative relationship that brought together different organisations in Haiti that emphasised mutual interests and a shared vision. By collaborating, Dresse was able to have her employees work and learn at the same time. Further, the collaboration effort helped Dresse to increase her business capacity and increase efficiency in the workplace.

The annual fees associated with getting licensed as a certified Fair Trade manufacturer are quite costly for a small business with limited resources. The regulations also require workers to possess specialised skills, and training is required. Again, non-profits pitched in and helped Caribbean Craft pay these fees. In the end, increased know-how and skill levels mean that workers make more money and can afford to spend on locally produced goods and services. In Haiti, the unilateral vision of the ‘visionary entrepreneur’ has given way to a new model where different businesses with mutual interests combine to help create new business opportunities. Without this collaboration, entrepreneurs like Magalie Dresse may never have had the opportunity to realize their vision.

1. Describe how Magalie Dresse is a different kind of entrepreneur.

2. Discuss whether or not businesses within a country’s borders have an ethical responsibility to help and assist in developing workers’ skills and employment opportunities.
