Christmas in Ecuador is a purely family and religious holiday, it is the most important celebration of the year, since all families try to meet at the dinner on December 24 where the usual thing is to eat turkey or pork as a main dish and as dessert the pristiños , which are fried rings of wheat flour dough, dipped in panela syrup.

On Christmas night, at midnight, the gifts that "Santa Claus" has previously brought are distributed to children and adults, the same ones that are usually found under the Christmas tree and are delivered by one of those present.

In some houses one of the adults disguises himself as Santa Claus, and arrives with the gifts in a sack and distributes them. That tradition was common in the sixties and seventies.

Because Ecuador is a Catholic country, a very special activity is the making of nativity scenes or nativity scenes, and the recitation of the Novena of the Child God that takes place every night starting on December 16.

This is a deeply rooted custom and families pray them in their respective houses the 8 days before Christmas Eve (the 24th). That day, which would correspond to the last day of the ninth, pray at the house where they are going to celebrate dinner.

Another custom that some families still keep is to have the Child Jesus covered, during the days prior to December 24, thereby simulating his birth, which is what is celebrated.

Groups are also organized to pray the novena, held every day in a different house from the group, the children sing Christmas carols accompanied by small musical instruments.

A popular children's activity is the "letter to the Child Jesus, which must be written by the children at least one month before Christmas and where they state that they have behaved appropriately, so they include a list of things they would like to receive Christmas Day.
