Roberto Gòmez Bolaños was born on February 21, 1929 in Mexico City.
He was the son of the bilingual secretary Elsa Bolaños Cacho and of the painter, sketcher and illustrator Francisco Gómez Linares. He studied mechanical engineering at the National Autonomous University of Mexico, but never graduated.
He began his career as an advertising creative, which connected him with radio and television, in which he was, during the 1950s, a very active screenwriter. He also made several film scripts for the duo Viruta and Capulina and began briefly as an actor with them in Two spoiled servants in 1960. However, he continued to devote most of his time to writing, contributing dialogues for screenplays and Programs of Mexican television.
In 1968, the Independent Television of Mexico initiated transmissions and Chespirito was called like writer with the offer to use at his whim a half hour weekly to his position. Thus were born the supergenes of the square table and his career as an actor. Then his series was very successful and extended to an hour of programming.

"Chespirito" is well known for his roles in Chavo and Chapulín Colorado. He was also the creator of several other characters, such as Chómpiras, Doctor Chapatín, Vicente Chambón and Chaparrón Bonaparte.
Gómez Bolaños had two relationships. In the first instance, he married Graciela Fernández, with whom he fathered six children. Shortly afterwards, the relationship he held with one of the co-stars of his program, Florinda Meza, who played Doña Florinda in the Chavo del Ocho, was made public. The couple had no children of their own because Chespirito decided to have a vasectomy before meeting Florinda.

Roberto Gomez Bolaños died at age 85, on November 28, 2014 in Cancun, Mexico.
