Depende como te lo enseñaron, el que tiene ' es informal y el que va con not es el formal pero ambos están bien.

los que tienen was se convierten en:  Was not (formal) / Wasn't (informal)

los que tienen were se convierten en:  Were not (formal) / Weren't  (informal)
