Dr Lola Friend is sitting on a boat in the Indian Ocean. The day is calm and it´s very hot. Nobody is speaking. Suddenly, she is jumping up and shouting. “A blow! A blow!”
Immediately, we´re moving across the sea where there is still some spray in the air. We are looking for the world´s largest animal, the blue whale, and there´s one right in front of us!
The whale is swimming next to the boat and it is enormous.
Lola is a marine biologist and she studies whales.
“For many people, it´s a dream job,” she explains.
“Lots of people want to work with animals and protect the environment.”
But are there any downsides to the job? “Sure,” she laughs, “it´s not easy to see whales because they spend most of their time under the water. We often spend days on the boat and we see nothing. You just sit and look at the sea. Nothing changes. It´s like a blue desert!”
But today we´re chasing a huge whale and it is a spectacular sight to see!
