Zero Conditional
We use the zero conditional to talk about things that are always or generally true. (laws of nature)
If people use public transport, there is less traffic.
If I cut my finger, it bleeds. = When I cut my finger, it bleeds.
• We use the present simple in both sentences: the if-clause and the main clause.
• We can use when instead of if in the if-clause.
First Conditional
We use the first conditional to talk about something that is possible in the present or future.
If I study, I will pass the English exam.
If the bus doesn’t come soon, I’ll take a taxi to the train station.
If you don’t understand the lesson, ask the teacher.
• We use the present simple in the if-clause, and the future simple in the main clause.
• We can also use an imperative or a modal verb in the main clause.
