Cuando queremos comunicar o informar de lo que otra persona ha dicho, hay dos maneras de hacerlo: utilizando el estilo directo (direct speech) o el estilo indirecto (reported speech).
El reported speech es la forma en la que puedes contar, explicar, escribir o decir algo con tus propias palabras, cambiando el tiempo verbal al pasado.
El Present Simple pasa a ser Past Simple.
Por ejemplo, el Past Simple y el Present Perfect pasan a ser Past Perfect.
El Present Continous pasa a ser Past Continous.
Para usarlo, también hay otras dos cosas a tener en cuenta:
1. Los modal verbs (verbos modales) cambian:
Como he dicho antes, los tiempos verbales cambian una vez que se pasa del estilo directo al indirecto, y a los modal verbs también les afecta esto:
Will -> Would
Can -> Could
Must -> Had to
Shall -> Should
May -> Might
Excepciones: would, could, should, might y ought to.
2. Los adverbios de tiempo y lugar también cambian.
Yesterday -> The previous day / The day before
Today -> That day
Tonight -> That night
Tomorrow -> The following/next day
Now -> At that moment
Here -> There
