The more land the settlers got, the more power they received. Being supported by significant advances in technology, especially in the war department (guns), it was easy for them to start to take over land. At first, there was a negotiation process in which they both established a commercial relationship, but it wasn't long until the settlers got progressively more agressive, reaching the doctrine of Manifest Destiny.
