There was only one college building and a few students in 1849, when Queen's
opened its doors. Specifically, it had 23 professors and 343 students. More than
150 years passed and the University grew in size and number of students and
teachers. Last year, there were over 300 buildings and some 24,000 students
attended the institution. Throughout the 20th Century, there was much interest
in Queen's constant and expanding development. Today, it is one of the most
respected universities in the British Isles. In the last quarter of the century, there
were some very influential Vice-Chancellors in post. They directed a major
restructuring of the University and a program designed to put among the first
international research universities in the world. Queen's also became an essential
part of Belfast city as it started participating in Belfast's festivals, sport events,
and everyday life. On 20 June 2006 the university announced an important
investment programme to improve facilities, recruitment and research. One of
the outcomes of this investment was a new university library: the McClay library
which opened in July 2009. Academics at Queen's are organised into twenty
schools across three faculties. The three faculties are the Faculty of Arts,
Humanities and Social Sciences, the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences
and the Faculty of Medicine, Health and Life Sciences.
