ATENAS DEL SIGLO Va.C; Atenas no destacaba en el siglo VI a.C. por su poder, presencia o economía, pues era básicamente una sociedad rural. Sólo tras unificarse varios pueblos y ser la capital del Ática, la península donde se asienta, empezó a adquirir una importancia considerable entre el resto de las ciudades-Estado griegas.

Athens was one of the first cities to establish democracy (although some anthropological research suggests that democratic behaviors were probably common in some stateless societies long before the heyday of Athens). Other Greek cities also established democracies, but not all followed the Athenian model, and certainly none were as powerful or stable (or well documented) as Athens. It remains a unique and intriguing experiment in direct democracy, where people did not elect representatives to vote on their behalf, but instead developed legislation and exercised executive power personally. However, participation was by no means universal, but among those who participated, economic power hardly influenced, and the number of people involved was enormous.
