Narrated in the first person, the novel follows the life of Ram Mohammad Thomas (fictional character), a young orphan with no education, works as a waiter and becomes a millionaire and his love for Nita. The novel tells that the young man has answered all the questions of a famous television contest called Who wants to be a millionaire ?.
That program does not have enough money to pay him, so they call the police, then the young man is arrested with the possibility of cheating, the other possibility was that he had extensive knowledge or a lot of luck (which seems unlikely).
He is interrogated, asked why someone without education knows the answers. With explanations, he implies that everything is an experience of his life in poverty.
Ram recounts his own life with the sole intention of justifying each of his successes and thus proving his innocence. This is how we know India today and some events from its past: the construction of the Taj Mahal, the Indian-Pakistani conflict of 1971, drug addiction and alcoholism, the prostitution business, corruption in the police, the mutilation of children to become beggars, the world of local celebrities, and religion.
After finding no proof of deception, Ram is released, later meeting the love of his life.
