Mt. Kīlauea on Hawaii's Big Island is one of the most active volcanoes on Earth. Local islanders have been witnesses to its evolving shape over hundreds of years. Sections of earth are often displaced by a sudden jolt, or pressure builds up under the surface as the hot molten rock expands, causing a destructive eruption. Nowadays, the volcano is closely monitored trying to predict the next eruption.
