After he was shot on December 8, 1980, there was no funeral for John. Yoko Ono had Lennon's body cremated in Ferncliff Cemetery on this day, December 10.
Yoko scattered his ashes in Central Park, in full view of his New York apartment. Five years later, the Strawberry Fields Memorial was dedicated at the approximate location, and more or less serves as Lennon's official grave.According to the controversial biographer Albert Goldman, this ensured that he wanted to die:
“Lennon had a horror of cremation, a practice he meddled against and once proposed to protest in song. Despite his dislike, Yoko arranged for the cremation of his body. It is also clear that none of his family in England were consulted about the superficial disposal of his body."John's 5-year-old son, Sean, did not receive the horrible news until the morning of December 10. Understandably distraught, he asked to see his father one last time, so Lennon's assistant, Fred Seaman , called security agent Douglas MacDougal at Ferncliff Mortuary and asked him to call off the cremation. It was too late.
According to Seaman's account in his book "The Last Days of John Lennon," MacDougal told him that John's face had been serene and calm until just before the body went into the oven, when it suddenly contorted into a " pained macabre smile” apparently due to rigor mortis.
MacDougal had also warned Yoko a couple of months before the murder that the Lennons were taking crazy risks by going public with their daily routine and having no bodyguardsIt is known that there was something deeply sinister in the last years of John's reclusion with Astrology, obsessed by Yoko Ono.
George Harrison once clarified about visits to Dakota:
“I always felt like there was something else I wanted to say, but couldn't, maybe because Yoko was always ahead of me. There was something in the look of her, in her eyes.”
