THE CASE OF THE STOLEN DIAMONDS
and answer the“They stole my jewels”, said the owner of Best’s jewelry store to the detective. “I just called
my insurance company. They are sending a man here to decide how much money to pay
me for the stolen jewels.” “Tell me what happened”, said the detective.
“I came into the store alone”, Mr. Best began. “Two thieves came in a few minutes later.
The blond one had a gun. He looked at me angrily and told me to open the safe. I was
afraid, so I gave him my biggest diamonds. Then they tied me to a chair. After they left, I
freed myself from the ropes and called you.”
“What did the two men look like?” asked the detective. “One was thin and the other was fat.
They wore masks over their whole heads with only little holes for their eyes and mouths.”
Just then the insurance man arrived. “Don’t worry”, the detective said to him. “You don’t
have to pay Mr. Best anything. He is lying about the thieves; he took the diamond himself.”
