A MAN OF MANY FACES
Frank Abagnale was born in the USA
in 1948 and he grew up in New York.
He was a happy child until his father
and mother got divorced. After that,
he started to steal from shops, but he
soon got bored and wanted to make
more money. He stole money from
banks, but he didn't plan robberies
with guns or knives. He found ways to get money
from the banks illegally and the banks never
saw the money again.
Abagnale enjoyed imitating different people
and often changed his identity to make it
harder for the police to catch him. When
he was 16, he decided to become
a pilot. He phoned Pan American
Airlines and told them he was
a pilot and needed a new
uniform. He collected his
new uniform, created a false pilot's licence and flew
to 26 different countries! While he was "working" as
a pilot, he stayed in hotels around the world for free.
Later, he worked as a doctor at a hospital in Atlanta,
Georgia for 11 months. He never learned medicine,
of course! Abagnale also taught at a university
without a teacher's certificate and became a lawyer
without going to law school
In 1969, police officers arrested Abagnale in
France. He went to court and then to prison.
While Abagnale was in prison, 12 other
countries were investigating his crimes
and collecting evidence. After six
months in a French prison, he
went to prison in Sweden and
then in the USA
In 1974, Abagnale got out of prison.
He isn't a criminal anymore and he
works as a fraud prevention consultant!
