They are layers of soil with a high percentage of organic matter.
Typically, within a wooded area there are three distinct organic layers: one of leaves, pine needles, and twigs (Oi); supported by a partially decomposed layer (Oe); and then a very dark layer of well decomposed humus.
A HORIZON:
Mineral horizons that have formed on the surface or below an O horizon.Exhibit the destruction of all or a large part of the original rock structure.
and show one or both of the following: (1) an accumulation of humified organic matter intimately mixed with the mineral fraction and not dominated by properties characteristic of the E or horizons. B (defined below), or (2) properties resulting from cultivation, grazing, or similar types of disturbance
E HORIZON:
Is a mineral horizon in the upper part of the soil. Typically present only in forested areas it underlies an O or A horizon. It is a light colored, leached horizon.
