The massive migration of Venezuelans to Peru has positive and negative effects for the country, in addition to showing an impact on employment, said today the Minister of Economy and Finance, Carlos Oliva.

"There is definitely an effect on employment that we are monitoring, but it has both a positive and a negative side," he said.

"(Migration) is a phenomenon that responds to a severe crisis in Venezuela and in that sense our country does very well to receive all these people who have problems of various kinds in their country," he added.

Carlos Oliva said that they closely monitor this issue, but that the positive side is that a new workforce is arriving, with different skills.

"There are many Venezuelans who contribute to the economy with the skills they have, but at the same time if the economy does not grow at the rate it should grow, some kind of internal competition could be generated with this excess labor supply," he said.

"It is a very delicate issue, and on the side of the Ministry of Economy and Finance we are committed to ensuring that economic activity continues to grow and hopefully all this demand can be absorbed without affecting Peruvian workers," he added.

Basic services

The minister said that on the economic side there is nothing worrisome, but certainly pressure is being exerted on a series of basic services that the country has, especially in health and education.

"It seems to me that there are about 30,000 Venezuelan children who are already in schools, especially in national schools, and surely there is another group that demands health services," he said.

Carlos Oliva considered that Peru must be up to the situation, because this type of services cannot be closed, despite knowing that there are a series of deficiencies.
