You have two options: SSEES Library has two self-service machines, one on the Ground Floor and one on the First Floor. The second option is to bring your books to the Help Desk also on the Ground Floor. You will need your UCL card to borrow books. If you are using one of the self-service machines you will also need your PIN.

Undergraduates and Master's students may have up to 20 books from UCL libraries on loan at a time. Standard loan books may be borrowed for 8 weeks, but if books are on reading lists they are often limited to 3-day or 7-day loan to make sure everybody on a course gets a chance to use them. The Library charges fines for overdue books so don't forget to bring them back on time or renew them.

2. Can I renew books online? How many times can I renew books?

Standard loan books (8 week loans) and 7-day loans can be renewed as many times as necessary, as long as they have not been requested by another user. Please note that 3-day loan books cannot be renewed and must be returned to the Library on the day they are due. To renew books Sign-in to Explore using your UCL user name and password. Select "My Library Account" or "My Loans" from the drop-down menu below your name on the top-right of the screen and you will be given the option to renew your books. If a book is already overdue you will not be able to renew it online. Instead call the Library Help Desk on 020 7679 8701. Books requested by other borrowers may not be renewed.

3. How much are fines for books returned late?

20p a day for standard loans, 30p a day for 7-day loans and 50p a day for 3-day loans. Fines are charged on weekdays only, so the fine on a standard loan book that is one week late will be £1.00.

4. How do I request books that are on loan?

If all the copies of the book you need are on loan you can request a copy via Explore. The reader who has the book will be asked to return it to the Library, although if they have only just borrowed it they will be allowed to keep it for a few days.

5. Why can't I find my book, it's supposed to be here?

Check Explore to see if all the copies are on loan. If so, then request (reserve) a copy online. If Explore says the book is available, check that it belongs on the open shelves. We have to keep some books at Stores and they will need to be requested, either at the Help Desk or online. If the book should be on the open shelves and isn't, it might be on a reading desk anywhere in the Library, or on one of the shelving trolleys, on the reservation shelves on the Lower Ground Floor, or by the photocopiers. It might also be on the wrong shelf. If you still cannot find the book ask at the Help Desk - if we can't find it either we will start searching systematically.

6. The library doesn’t have a book I need. How can I get it?

You can suggest that the Library purchases the book via Explore. Or, if you require the book more urgently, you can make an Interlibrary Loan request for a small fee (£3.00 per item), also via Explore.

7. What is my PIN?

Your PIN is a 4-digit number, based on the day and the month of your birthday. For example, if you were born on 14th March your PIN would be 1403. You need your PIN to use the self-service machines at UCL Libraries. Ask for assistance at the Help Desk if you would like to change your PIN.

8. Can I borrow and return books when the Library is not staffed?

Yes. SSEES Library has two self-service machines (on the Ground Floor and the First Floor) that will allow you to borrow and return books at any time. The machines are easy to use, all you need is your UCL card and your PIN.
