One method of distilling crude oil is fractional distillation. By this method fractions are obtained and not pure products.
Refineries are used to distill oil. These are huge complexes where crude oil is subjected to physical separation processes in which a great variety of its derivatives are extracted.
The industrial distillation towers for petroleum have about 100 trays. In petroleum there are several compounds from which around 2000 products are obtained.
Each substance within the oil distills at a different temperature, from a fixed temperature a predetermined substance is obtained.
