EL PRESENTE SIMPLE EN INGLÉS

El presente simple se usa para indicar acciones que son habituales o acciones que ocurren pero no necesariamente en el momento en que se habla. Por ejemplo:

I go shopping with my friends – Voy de compras con mis amigos (Esto significa que voy con ellos regularmente o de vez en cuando; no necesariamente ahora mismo)
He reads to the children – Él lee a los niños
She stops in front of the school – Ella para en frente de la escuela
EL PRESENTE CONTINUO EN INGLÉS

El presente continuo es un tiempo verbal que indica una acción que está ocurriendo en el momento en que se habla. Es bastante parecido a, por ejemplo, ‘comiendo’, ‘caminando’, ‘diciendo’, etc. En el inglés coloquial significa también algo que va a ocurrir muy pronto. Veamos ahora unos ejemplos:

I am studying for my exam – Estoy estudiando para mi examen
I am cleaning the house – Estoy limpiando la casa
Robert is driving to the supermarket – Robert está manejando al supermercado
The mechanic is fixing our car – El mecánico está arreglando nuestro carro
PRESENTE CONTINUO CUANDO SE HACEN PREGUNTASWhere are you going? – ¿Dónde van ustedes?
We are going to the office – Vamos a la oficina
What are they doing tomorrow night? – ¿Qué hacen ellos mañana por la noche?
They are going to the party – Ellos van a la fiesta
Why are they working today? – ¿Por que están trabajando hoy?
They are finishing what they couldn’t finish yesterday – Están terminando lo que no pudieron terminar ayer.

Note la diferencia entre el presente simple y el presente continuo en inglés. Hablantes de español a menudo se confunden entre estos dos tiempos verbales.

1. Presente simple:

I take my mother to the hospital – Llevo mi mamá al hospital (La llevo cuando se require, podría ser de vez en cuando, semanalmente, mensualmente, de vez en cuando, etc, pero no necesariamente ahora mismo) Haga click aquí para escuchar

2. Presente continuo:

I am taking my mother to the hospital – Estoy llevando mi mama al hospital (Lo hago en este momento o enseguida)
PRESENTE CONTINUO CUANDO SE HABLA DEL FUTURO

En inglés coloquial se utiliza también el presente continuo para expresar el futuro. Hay también una estructura distinta para expresar el futuro pero es muy común utilizar el presente continuo en situaciones informales. Es muy parecido a situaciones donde se utiliza el presente en español para hablar del futuro. Por ejemplo:

We are going on vacation next week – Vamos de vacaciones la semana que viene
I am going to Sandra’s house tomorrow – Voy a la casa de Sandra mañana
Are you arriving tonight? – ¿Llegas esta noche?
Are you coming to visit us in April? – ¿Vienen a visitarnos en Abril?.
