Agatha Christie – Her Life and Work
Early Days
Agatha Christie was born in 1890 in Torquay, England. She spent a lot of her early childhood alone because her mother taught her at home. She loved reading and started writing at an early age. A company published Christie’s first novel featuring the famous Belgian detective, Hercule Poirot, in 1920. He appeared in 33 of her novels and in 54 short stories, but she never liked him!
Foreign Adventures
Agatha Christie developed a great interest in archaeology after marrying an archaeology professor in 1930. They traveled to many exotic places, and she set a lot of her most successful murder mysteries in those places.
Well-loved Characters
Agatha Christie’s other famous detective, after Hercule Poirot, was Miss Jane Marple. Poirot appeared in more novels than Marple, but Christie preferred Marple as a character. She used her grandmother as the model for Miss Marple!
Record-breaking publications
Agatha Christie, “The Queen of Crime,” died in 1976 at the age of 85. She is one of the
best-selling writers of all time. She wrote more than 70 novels. Sales of all of her books total more than two billion copies. Many of her books have become movies!
